What are millennials doing wrong when it comes to their careers
What are millennials doing wrong when it comes to their careersWhat are millennials doing wrong when it comes to their careersAs a headhunter, Ive had the privilege to witness, analyze, and influence countless people from generation Z to babyboomer. As a fellow millennial who escaped the rat race quickly and became financially free at age 28, here are the major themes I notice from my millennial peers, clients, and friends who have not found success in their careers1. Starting work too lateThis is by far the biggest problem, oftentimes caused by parents. Instead of encuraging kids to work, some parents only want their children to build their academic record and extra-curricular activities, not work history. Even in college, half the people I knew NEVER worked during the school year. They just had school and extra-curriculars to focus on.By the time they graduate, work hits them in the face like a ton of bricks and theyre stressed beyond belief. Adjusting, adulting, can simply prove to o much and lead to depression and reminiscing of the days without the responsibility of work. The sad truth is that unless youre born into wealth, you must WORK for a living, yet fruchtwein people live in a bubble until theyre forcibly thrown out into the workforce.Start taking on as many jobs as possible in addition to your extra-curricular activities. In highschool, I welches already helping my mom clean houses, weed-whacking, snow-shoveling, waitressing, while interning in white collar jobs at banks during the summer. In college, I bartended, sold high volumes of consumer goods on eBay, interned during the school year and in my summers, and taught my own brand of Chinese language classes, etc.2. Accumulating useless credentials and degreesWhen people who work too little graduate from college, they may find it hard to land a job due to fear of the unknown and lack of confidence. The thinking goes I cant get interviews = Im not a good candidate = I need more bells and whistles to s tand out as a strong candidate.9 times out 10, at the Bachelors level, to get a job really isnt that tied to academic success. Its rather understanding how to land interviews and nail them. In fact, most people at that age dont know what they want to do for a living, so the right strategy is to accumulate work experience. NOT go for more schooling because it delays realityAs sanctioned and encouraged by parents and our education system, many are pushed into delaying making any hard decisions by going back into school. No matter how much time youre welchesting and money it costs, somehow this is STILL the route that many confused young graduates take.My mom threatened to disown me due to her massive disappointment of me rejecting law school. I knew she was going to put me in a terrible financial situation as none of us had $200k lying around. I staunchly refused to be put into further financial slavery. I just finished undergrad, which I deemed more or less a waste of time not even G od could force me to do any more schoolInstead of believing in others pushing and your own insecurities, enter the workforce asap. Dont believe the hype Schoolonlyworks if youre pursuing highly technical professions within STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). If youre doing business, dont just jump into another MBA. Many professions that value the MBA like consulting and finance will PAY for your MBA, thus why should YOU pay out of pocket for it?3. Being idealistic versus realisticIn my graduating year, 2009, the recession was in full-swing, however, attitudes towards careers were not. All of my classmates talked about this awesome career called investment banking. Nowadays, I believe the equivalent is tech or AI or whatever else is trending. As much as I ideally would have liked to prove to my friends how cool and successful I was, I realized very quickly that I had no natural strengths and attributes that made a career in i-banking possible I was bad at quanti tative subjects, I was clueless how to get interviews at the top banks, and I didnt even really understand what the career was all about in the first place I just heard it was good.As it turned out, I didnt have the liberty to choose my career anyways. My parents needed me to run our familys Chinese restaurant immediately. All of a sudden, I had 12 employees and our familys house to look after. As I scrubbed tables, got yelled at by my staff and customers, I got to sincerely think about my future plans for myself. What would be my alternative career?Instead of pursuing what others would consider successful, I evaluated my natural strengths which centered on people and communication. The one job type that would allow someone with little technical skills to flourish financially and professionally would be sales. At age 23, I entered into the career track of a recruiter, aka headhunter, a career centered around finding, organizing, and successfully placing people at companies for commi ssion.4. Approaching work with the wrong attitudeMany people I know decry the pursuit of wealth. They proudly profess, I work to live, not live to work. This is the exact type of mindset the produces misery. No matter how lowly of a job I worked, I always did it with a smile on my face. I worked hard and I was nice, happy, and positive. That was a survival mechanism. Many people allow their misery to cloud their life every day. At the DMV, retail store, restaurant, white collar job, or anywhere really, youll meet miserable, mean, rude, selfish, lazy, bitter, and incompetent people. I feel bad for anyone who is miserable at work because I know what thats likeI was terrible at one of my summer internships in college. I didnt work hard at all. That was one of my worst job experiences because I knew I was incompetent and I didnt try to change that at all. I would fall asleep during team meetings because the job bored me to death.I felt like an idiot, a fraud, and I had nervous bouts of a nxiety since I knew I was totally incompetent I couldnt do simple excel sheets nor understand what the heck I was doing and for what purpose. Thankfully, that business realized I was horrible at my job and spared me by refusing to make me a full-time offer. In my headhunting job, I knew what I was doing since I used my natural strengths of being good at sales and people. I was making over $215k by the time I was 25. However, in my workplace, 90% of every class would flunk out and the turnover was high due to the lack of passion and professionalism many had towards our job. I often wondered, why do they come to work? They should just quit and find something they like doing You MUST find a job you can be good at. When you do, approach it with the right can-do, will-do, and work-hard attitude, and youll reap your just reward.5. Refusing to understand the power and importance of MONEYOur generation hates admitting that money is important. Due to how the student loans already take their t oll on your appreciation of debt and financial management, many already have a negative perception towards wealth and the pursuit of money. Our generation is also very idealistic (back to point 3). Instead of recognizing the natural correlation between valuable work and financial reward, many choose to hate this tethering to the need of money, even though its a total necessity for those of us without trust funds.Eventually, people just give up altogether. They dont save, plan, or investigate the many ways of how people can create incredible wealth in their lifetimes. Some embrace the idea that money is evil just so they can spare themselves the trouble of working hard for it. Its a lot easier to hate something than to do something about it.Instead, get educated on finance and money. No matter how young you are, if you dont have a large inheritance or trust fund coming your way, youre already behind. Your school also didnt teach you anything about this. Your parents dont have enough t o retire comfortably. You need to realize, youre on your own now for the REST OF YOUR LIFE. You better get going on understanding money and investing.I could go on and on, but this is the majority of the issues plaguing millennials today. As social media influences us and maximizes our insecurities, these problems for future generations may continue to be a growing issue. No matter what external factors there are, its up to you to decide what type of life you want, and ultimately take the steps appropriately to achieve your dream.Dandan Zhu is aHeadhunter, Career Coach, Investor, Podcaster Daily DANDAN.This column was originally posted on Quora.com.

Eight great tricks for reading peoples body language
Eight great tricks for reading peoples body languageEight great tricks for reading peoples body languageBody language provides an amazing amount of information on what other people are thinkingifyou know what to look for. And who hasnt wanted to read peoples minds at some point? You already pick up on mora body language cues than youre consciously aware of. UCLA research has shown that only 7% of communication is based on the actual words we say. As for the rest, 38% comes from tone of voice and the remaining 55% comes from body language. Learning how to become aware of and to interpret that 55% can give you a leg up with other people. When youre working hard and doing all you can to achieve your goals, anything that can give you an edge is powerful and will streamline your path to success.TalentSmarthas tested more than a million people and found that the upper echelons of top performance are filled with people who are high in emotional intelligence (90% of top performers, to be exact ). These people know the power that unspoken signals have in communication, and they monitor body language accordingly.Next time youre in a meeting (or even on a date or playing with your kids), watch for these cuesCrossed arms and legs signal resistance to your ideas. Crossed arms and legs are physical barriers that suggest the other rolle is not open to what youre saying. Even if theyre smiling and engaged in a pleasant conversation, their body language tells the story. Gerard I. Nierenberg and Henry H. Calero videotaped more than 2,000 negotiations for a book they wrote on reading body language, and not a single one ended in an agreement when one of the parties had their legs crossed while negotiating. Psychologically, crossed legs or arms signal that a person is mentally, emotionally, and physically blocked off from whats in front of them. Its not intentional, which is why its so revealing.Real smiles crinkle the eyes. When it comes to smiling, the mouth can lie but the eyes cant . Genuine smiles reach the eyes, crinkling the skin to create crows feet around them. People often smile to hide what theyre really thinking and feeling, so the next time you want to know if someones smile is genuine, look for crinkles at the corners of their eyes. If they arent there, that smile is hiding something.Copying your body language is a good thing.Have you ever been in a meeting with someone and noticed that every time you cross or uncross your legs, they do the same? Or perhaps they lean their head the same way as yours when youre talking? Thats actually a good sign. Mirroring body language is something we do unconsciously when we feel a bond with the other person. Its a sign that the conversation is going well and that the other party is receptive to your message. This knowledge can be especially useful when youre negotiating, because it shows you what the other person is really thinking about the deal.Posture tells the story.Have you ever seen a person walk into a room , and immediately, you have known that they were the one in charge? That effect is largely about body language, and often includes an erect posture, gestures made with the palms facing down, and open and expansive gestures in general. The brain is hardwired to equate power with the amount of space people take up. Standing up straight with your shoulders back is a power position it appears to maximize the amount of space you fill. Slouching, on the other hand, is the result of collapsing your form it appears to take up less space and projects less power. Maintaining good posture commands respect and promotes engagement, whether youre a leader or not.Eyes that lie. Most of us probably grew up hearing, Look me in the eye when you talk to me Our parents were operating under the assumption that its tough to hold someones gaze when youre lying to them, and they were right to an extent. But thats such common knowledge that people will often deliberately hold eye contact in an attempt to cov er up the fact that theyre lying. The problem is that most of them overcompensate and hold eye contact to the point that it feels uncomfortable. On average, Americans hold eye contact for seven to ten seconds, longer when were listening than when were talking. If youre talking with someone whose stare is making you squirm- especially if theyre very still and unblinking- something is up and they might be lying you.Raised eyebrows signal discomfort. There are three main emotions that make your eyebrows go up surprise, worry, and fear. Try raising your eyebrows when youre having a relaxed casual conversation with a friend. Its hard to do, isnt it? If somebody who is talking to you raises their eyebrows and the topic isnt one that would logically cause surprise, worry, or fear, there is something else going on.Exaggerated noddingsignals anxiety about approval. When youre telling someone something and they nod excessively, this means that they are worried about what you think of them or th at you doubt their ability to follow your instructions.A clenched jaw signals stress.A clenched jaw, a tightened neck, or a furrowed brow are all signs of stress. Regardless of what the person is saying, these are signs of considerable discomfort. The conversation might be delving into something theyre anxious about, or their mind might be elsewhere and theyre focusing on the thing thats stressing them out. The key is to watch for that mismatch between what the person says and what their tense body language is telling you.Bringing It All TogetherThe bottom line is that even if you cant read a persons exact thoughts, you can learn a lot from their body language, and thats especially true when words and body language dont match.Travis Bradberry is the coauthor ofEmotional Intelligence 2.0and the cofounder ofTalentSmart. This article originally appeared onLinkedIn.

Theres more than enough time, when you use the time you have
There's more than enough time, when you use the time you have There's more than enough time, when you use the time you have Have you ever been so busy that you struggled to notice the needs of those around you? Even those most dear to you?Even worse than being over-busy is being distracted by things with little or no value like mindlessly surfing the web when your child wants to play.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Without question, there are countless things we could do at any moment of our lives. What do we choose to do with our moments? What does that say about us?How can you learn to truly use the time you have, so that looking back each day you will be proud of who you were and how you lived? The following is a short list of principles, that if applied, will empower you to make the most of every moment of your life. To be sure, developing these habits is not easy in our heavily distracted and externally-driven world. But the cost of not getting control over your time and life is astronomica l. Itâs everything. For, how we use our time determines everything about: Who we are Who we will become What we will accomplish in our days, and in our lives How deep our relationships are And ultimately what we value most Letâs begin in humility, for this is too important to ignore:Be Where You Are: In Mind And BodyâWherever you are, make sure youâre there.â Dan SullivanAwareness is the first step. What are you doing right now? Be there, not somewhere else.If youâre with your friends, be with your friends. If youâre doing the dishes, do the dishes.Itâs amazing how bad weâve all gotten at being present. At actually living in the world and connecting deeply with the experiences weâre having with the people we love. However, awareness is far from sufficient. Indeed, full-engagement in the wrong things is no better than being distracted by something else.Good Things Are A Dime-A-DozenâWe should be careful not to exhaust our available time on things that are merely good and leave little time for that which is better or best.â Dallin OaksIn every situation, you must ask yourself, âIs this the best possible use of my time?â Is this the best approach? Or am I settling for less? Derek Sivers has created a great benchmark for activity: If something is not a HELL YES!, itâs a no. End of story. If you are not 100% behind what youâre currently doing, stop doing it. There are certainly better things you could be doing. For me, passively watching a movie with my kids is good. However, actively engaging with them whether playing games, laughing, playing out in the yard is better.Listening to or reading uplifting content is good. However, there are also better things you could be doing, like helping someone. The problem with doing good things is that they are easy to justify because they are inherently good. But, as Jim Collins, author of Good To Great, has said, âGood is the enemy of great. Few people attain great lives, in large part because it is just so easy to settle for a good life.âThere are a million good things you could do this very moment. You could go to the gym. You could read a book. You could hangout with a friend. You could spend the even ing with your family. You could watch a movie. But what is the âbestâ thing you could be doing right now? Context determines what is good, better, or best. Every situation is different. In some situations, itâs best to stop on the side of the road to help the person with a flat tire. In other situations, itâs best to pass them by. In some situations, itâs best to go to class. In other situations, itâs best to skip class. In some situations, the absolute best thing you could do is relax and chill-out. Or go crazy with excitement.Meaning is shaped within contexts. And every context is unique. Which is why you must be present to your circumstances. If you are not mindful but instead disconnected and distracted you wonât be able to determine what is good, better, or best.Always Take The Higher RoadâMay we ever choose the harder right, instead of the easier wrong.â Thomas MonsonI once asked an older couple whom I deeply respect how theyâve lived such a beautiful life . The wife responded, âIn every situation, we determined to always walk the higher road.âIn every situation, there are always at least two options. Which one is your natural default? When the alarm clock goes off, do you push snooze or get up? When youâre with your spouse, do you compliment or criticize? Do you listen, or must you always speak?Doing what is best is not always convenient. Actually, the lower road is almost always easier. As Robert Frost famously penned, âTwo roads diverged in a wood, and I I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.âLiterally every situation youâre in is a fork in the road. You can become consistent even automatic at choosing the harder, better road. And you can find joy in being and becoming the person you desire to be. You can develop confidence using your time in meaningful ways, and positively impacting those around you.You can find satisfaction looking back on a day you invested in yourself and others whic h is sure to yield enormous dividends, rather than a day you merely consumed.Be Who You Ideally Want To Become, TodayâHow would your life change if you made decisions TODAY as if you were already the person you want to become TOMORROW?â Richie NortonWho do you want to be tomorrow? How about in 5 years? 10 years? 20 years? On your 80th birthday?Stephen Covey has taught that highly effective people âBegin with the end clearly in mind.âYour current behaviors are a reflection of the future vision you have of yourself. For most people, that vision is not much different than their present selves. However, once you determine who you want to become, you must start acting like that person now. Otherwise, you will never become that person. As Bill Walsh has said, âWinners act like winners before they become winners.â Thatâs how they become âwinners.âIn Third Circle Thoery, Pejman Ghadimi explains that most people envision their lives no more than 1â"3 years into the f uture, mostly living week-to-week.Ghadimi argues about 20% of people envision their lives 5â"10 years into the future, and thus act accordingly and become enormously more successful. Lastly, 2% of people envision their lives in whole âbeginning with the end in mindâ of who they want to be the day they die. Consider these words by Elon Musk: âI would like to die on Mars. Just not on impact.â Itâs obvious how that vision determines Muskâs daily behavior. To be sure, not all of us can or should be Elon Musk. But the vision guiding his daily behaviors is instructive. Without question, the potency of his âwhyâ is âhowâ he can work 100 hour weeks year-after-year. And his behaviors are a reflection of his values, which he is unapologetic about. His values may not be your values. But are you consistently acting in accordance with your values? Is your why strong enough to keep you choosing the harder right, or do you consistently default to the easy wrong?Give Everyt hing To The Things That Truly Matter, And Forget About Everything ElseâWhen you cannot do what you have always done, then you only do what matters most.â Robert HalesBecoming a foster parent has been the hardest thing Iâve ever done. The first 6 months were hell. I wasnât ready for it. In my heart, I didnât want it.Thankfully, overtime, I was able to have a change of heart. Now, I couldnât be happier to invest my time in these kids. Theyâve become in large measure, my why if not exclusively, theyâve radically strengthened my why.But being a foster parent has done more for me. Itâs given me clarity about what really matters to me. If Iâm going to be a good foster parent, then I donât have time to do many of the things I used to do. And thatâs okay. Actually, itâs the best. Because for me, itâs almost forced me to forego the many good options I could put my time into for what I believe is the best use of my time.Whatever it is you truly value, devote you r time to those things. The thingsyou consider âbest.â And remove all other non-essential distractions from your life.Become The Master Of Your MindâYou tell me what you think about when you do not have to think, and Iâll tell you what you are.â Llewelyn McKayItâs impossible to use your time well when you canât even govern your own mind. Most peopleâs minds are like a garden that has been overgrown with weeds. They havenât done the work of managing their minds or pruning it, digging it about, and preparing the soil for good fruits. However, you can master the garden of your mind. And when you do, you will be in-control of yourself. When you have clear, simple, and specific goals and values with which you resonate with and your thoughts are constantly mulling these things over your greatest desires will manifest quickly.Every thought you think plays a role in who you are, and how you are living in the world. As James Allen has said in As a Man Thinketh, âA man i s literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts.âTake-Aways:All of these things take constant practice. You will never âarriveâ at any of these things. Every day is simply practice at getting better. Here are a few actionable ways you can start improving the use of your time. Work on being more aware of what youâre doing. Catch yourself disengaging. If youâre with people, leave your phone in your car, or in a drawer, or somewhere it doesnât tempt you. Work on being where you are, and embracing the moments. Take time to write down your core values and goals. Consider Stephen Coveyâs advice and imagine your 80th birthday party. Who do you want to be at the end of your life? What will you have wanted to accomplish? This vision determines what is good, better, and best in your life. Once you know what you want, it becomes painfully obvious what you donât want. Thus, you wonât be seduced by the many good things in life distracting you from the better and best. When given an option, choose the harder right. As we can learn from Steve Jobs, standards arenât for bending. Consistently walk the higher road and you will be transformed internally and externally. Remove the things in your life that get in the way of the âbestâ things. Or, be highly thoughtful about how you keep these things in your life. You donât have much time on this planet. Become the master of your thoughts. When you catch yourself mindlessly wandering, or going places counter to your values and goals, stop yourself. Memorize a poem, quote, scripture, or song that brings clarity and light to you. Whenever you have a negative or unhelpful thought, recite or ponder your memorized friend. Then, reflect on your values and goals. Eventually, youâll get better even automatic at thinking about the things you want to think about. Your thoughts are what create your reality. 6 holiday fitness hacks to get you through the season
6 holiday fitness hacks to get you through the season 6 holiday fitness hacks to get you through the season Christmas is a time for celebration, for people to enjoy spending quality time with their loved ones, whilst enjoying delicious festive food. However, for those who have worked tirelessly on their fitness regime throughout the year, it can also be a time of dread. Will there be healthy options at the Christmas party? Will people think youâre boring if you turn down an alcoholic beverage? To help you overcome this struggle, we caught up with Head Trainer and Co-Owner of F45 Stratford, Sam Gregory, who offers his expert advice on how to ensure your fitness regime stays on track throughout the festive season.Be RealisticYou need to remember that during the Christmas period, you are going to drink and eat more than you usually would, and youâre probably not going to get the 8 hours of sleep you would like. This should not fill you with dread, as youâre going to be dancing and smiling more than you would if you were asleep, and youâre going to be having the fun you deserve. Itâ s called the festive season for a reason, so give yourself a break and enjoy yourself!Try Fasted CardioAlthough Christmas is not a time to worry about your exercise routine, there are easy ways you can counteract the damage. For example, Sam recommends that you adapt your training regime by opting for a morning cardio session on an empty stomach, as depleted state interval training burns significantly more body fat than training after youâve eaten. You could also try taking part in a HIIT class, that will help you burn around 800 calories in a short space of time, like at F45.Ramp Up Your Resistance TrainingWith the inevitable increase in food, your body will constantly be in a positive calorie balance, i.e., more calories coming in than going out. These are the ideal conditions to help build muscle, which is why most summer bodies are made in the winter! Use this to your advantage and get down to the gym to lift some weights as and when you can.Incorporate Certain ExercisesDuring the festive period when youâre eating and drinking things you would not usually, it is a good idea to incorporate large compound exercises into your resistance training. This includes; squats, deadlifts, push ups, chin ups, lunges and shoulder presses. These movements have a much greater âanabolicâ effect, meaning youâll recruit more muscles and burn more calories, even during your rest period.Stick To The SpiritsEveryone knows the festive period is about eating, drinking and being merryâ¦and thereâs no reason why you shouldnât! However, to combat the effects, Sam advises you stick to the spirits and low calorie mixers. Though, this is obviously not as good as not drinking at all, itâs definitely a better options than 10 pints of lager.Dance ⦠A LotYou might think that a night out with your friends is doing nothing for your fitness regime, but actually, you can burn anything from 350-600 calories an hour from dancing. So make sure to hit the dance floor whenever yo u can during the party season.Eat Your GreensFeast your eyes away from the roast potatoes and parsnips and load your plate up with all the vegetables that you can find. How to Write a Super LinkedIn Headline
How to Write a Super LinkedIn Headline How to Write a Super LinkedIn Headline Your LinkedIn headline the most visible section of your LinkedIn profile. It is the very first thing people see under your picture and it stretches across the top of your profile page. Your LinkedIn headline is the key to making a positive first impression. Technically speaking LinkedInâs search algorithm takes the headline into account, so it must contain strategic keywords(similar to the keywords you would include in a resume) to help you appear in the right searches. LinkedIn states in their Help forum that: âIf you want your LinkedIn account to be a way that people discover you or your company, youâll want to place an emphasis on keywords - words which people will search for on LinkedIn and that will show up on search engines.â Long story short, it matters! So, we offer some quick tips on how to write a super LinkedIn headline. And hey, if it is being viewed by business connections and recruiters, then your LinkedIn headline is key to successful maximizing the networking power of LinkedIn. Writing a super LinkedIn headline Did you know that LinkedIn creates your headline by default? They do it based on your current job title and company. But default titles are always boring and look âdefaultâ, maybe even âlazyâ. If you stick with the default you are wasting an opportunity to show up in more searches and show you are actively using LinkedIn. Everyone is at adifferent stage in their career. Here are some great LinkedIn headlinesyou can use whether you are a job seeker, currently employed, unemployed, a student, or running a business. 1. Unemployed and job seekers You can imagine having the word âUnemployedâ as your headline would not be very helpful for recruiters to find you. First, it says nothing about what you do. Next, if everyone is doing it, you are not standing out. So, be specific and try a headline in this format: Template:[experience level] | [type of role you are seeking] |[your value prop] Example: Executive | Business Development | I turn Fortune 500s into Fortune 50s. 2. Students As a student with limited experience, there is not much that can be added to a profile. But by no meansdoes the profile have to be empty, boring, or unprofessional. Show enthusiasm to get your first job and try this headline below: Template: [industry you actively seek] | [your alma mater] | [type of employment you seek] Example: Graphic Design Artist | Penn State University | Actively Seeking Entry-Level or Internship Positions Note: One thing all students should know now and for the future! You will find your college friends and alumni are your network and friends for life. It was this way before social media, too. College is an everlasting, unique bonding experience for people who attended before, during, and after school. It helps you to connect with people who attended the same college or university as you. 3. Custom LinkedIn headlines for the employed and business owners Whether you use LinkedIn to attract business connections or seek employment while employed, your headline should expand upon the LinkedIn default headline of [job title] at [company name]. So, use the headline to mention your special skills, goals, and business name. We will use an example of Find My Profession: Template: [Untraditional Job title] | [Skills] | [Industry or Business Name] Example: Definitely Not A Recruiter | $100k+ Exec Career Finder | FindMyProfession.com The important things to remember for your headline Use strategic keywords Expand upon the LinkedIn default headline Think of ways you can create opportunities with your headline Keep these three points in mind and you are surely going to write a super LinkedIn headline.

Multitasking is bad for youunless you do it this way
Multitasking is bad for youâ"unless you do it this way Multitasking is bad for you- unless you do it this way We all know the studies that show that multitasking is bad for us, resulting in lower performance and decreased attention. But the demands on us just donât stop, so what if thereâs a better way?Now it looks like there is.A study from researchers at Tel Aviv University made up of five experiments shed light on an effective way to multitask. It boils down to a concept called âmemory reactivation.âThe key: do one task thoroughly until you have physically memorized it, and then start a new task within a certain period of time and learn that thoroughly. The key is that when you get used to the physical actions of a task, itâs easier and less taxing to repeat it.In other words, hereâs the surprising part of the finding: you can multitask better if you commit each task to muscle memory, turning it almost automatic. In contrast, if we do two different tasks successively, trying to learn each one at the same time, then we jam our ability to thoroughly learn each task. That can creat e interference in our minds, which reduces the quality of the work weâre doing.âCompeting for the same brain resourcesâDr. Nitzan Censor of TAUâs School of Psychological Sciences and Sagol School of Neuroscience commented on the research in a statement in a write-up of the study.âWhen we learn a new task, we have great difficulty performing it and learning something else at the same time. For example, performing a motor task A (such as performing a task with one hand) can reduce performance in a second task B (such as performing a task with the other hand) conducted in close conjunction to it. This is due to interference between the two tasks, which compete for the same brain resourcesâ¦Our research demonstrates that the brief reactivation of a single learned memory, in appropriate conditions, enables the long-term prevention of, or immunity to, future interference in the performance of another task performed in close conjunction,â Censor said. What the researchers found The research was done on a smaller scale- 81 people, ages 18-40, which is much smaller than studies than can claim a significant result. In the study, participants first practiced typing out a set of five numbers using their right hand as quickly and correctly as they could - this was the âoriginal memory.âParticipants then did this again on another day (drawing on first practice they learned), then also did it with the left hand (the ânovel memoryâ) during a specific period of time. The researchers said that waiting to learn the second task separately and fully allowed people to learn both tasks better. In their words, it decreased âfuture interference between the two memories.âIt also had a lasting effect.A month after âmemory reactivation,â the results held up, and more research showed that multitasking didnât necessarily depend on practice, but instead just enough time to remember how to do the original task.Try this for yourself the next time you have to mul titask: tackle each assignment separately at first, to master all of its elements. Then, only later, combine them. If the research is correct, your multitasking should become a far less frantic and more rewarding activity.

Train your Brain to Think Like a Futurist in 2014
Train your Brain to Think Like a Futurist in 2014 Train your Brain to Think Like a Futurist in 2014 Train your Brain to Think Like a Futurist in 2014 Sommers, author of Think Like a Futurist: Know What Changes, What Doesnt, And Whats Next(Jossey-Bass, 2013) You may be downing your Starbucks Venti. You may be driving your car, or telling your kids to pick up their backpacks. Whatever youre doing, youre thinking about the future. The human brain is wired to make predictions. Constantly. In each moment, its assessing the situation and, based on past experience, makes assumptions about what comes next: Having landed a big project over coffee, youll tell your assistant to clear all personal appointments from your calendar for the next month; When the queue to the freeway entrance ramp is longer than usual, youll plan an alternate route home; When the tell-tale stink of stale sweat wafts into your house, youll know that your son needs to replace the dirty gym clothes in his pack with a fresh set for tomorrow. Thinking Ahead vs Thinking Like a Futurist Your brain is jumping ahead even as you read this sentence, interpreting marks on the page as familiar letters, words, sentences, and meaning. The vocabulary is quite basic, so you already know what comes ________. See, you are thinking about the future. (Correct answer: Next) But you are not thinking like a futurist. Heres the difference. Thinking about the future uses past experience to anticipate what comes next. Thinking like a futurist rejects this backward-looking orientation and instead looks sideways, backwards, forwards, and upside down in order to envision an unexperienced, and often unexpected, future; it is a different exercise of the brain. Futurist Thinking in Business Neurologically, thinking about the future is simply a reconfiguration of past memories and feelings. We know this because, using brain scans, cognitive scientists have recently observed that the area of the brain that lights up when we recall a memory also lights up when were asked to imagine a future event. Early in the human evolutionary process, this quick-fill pattern of foresight helped us run the other way when, say, we recognized the paw prints of a Saber-toothed tiger. If he was there yesterday hell be there again today. This pattern of thinking is also used in cumulative learning (from arithmetic to algebra to calculus), to get through everyday tasks efficiently. And, if you ascribe to Malcolm Gladwells Outliers rule of 10,000 hours, achieve mastery in your field. However, pulling from the past to create the future can also trap you in what I call the Permanent Present, a linear continuation of current conditions. In a world that is increasingly discontinuous, the brains default prediction mechanism is a liability. Witness the erosion of market share of the once dominant Blackberry smartphone, plummeting from a Crackberry-worthy 44% in 2009 to a Slackberry-nadir of 1% in 2013. Contrarily, by committing to a bold, future-forward digital strategy aimed at Millennials, Burberrys stock price rose 200% in six years. Burberrys brand story remains consistent with its heritage as a 150-year-old luxury brand and, by reimagining retail as a digital-first experience, it is also consistent with where the future is headed. What worked for Burberry worked for innovators like Amazon, Apple, Google, Netflix, and Warby Parker, and it will work for you: a creative leap into a scenario that looks different than your past. Train your Brain to Think Like a Futurist Creative leaps come when memories are combined in unexpected ways what neuroscientists call associative fluency a facility that grows in direct proportion to the memories it draws from. It also grows with practice; here are three tips for training your brain to think like a futurist: 1.Change perspective Choose experiences that literally shift your perspective: Go skydiving. Interview someone whose experience and beliefs are different than your own. Take a survival challenge. Challenge yourself to do something thats scary every day. 2.Look under the hood Get curious about how things work. Dive into different disciplines and keep asking why: Study philosophy. Go the planetarium. Talk to a political campaign manager. Listen to science lecturers. Read history. Visit a factory. Take the opposing side of an issue. 3.Give it a rest An unfocused state of mind is often where it all comes together. As you turn down your attention on the external world, your brain will start connecting unrelated experiences in new ways: Take a walk. Stare out the window. Lie in the sun. Get a massage. Book a session in a flotation tank. Meditate. Sit by the fire, or on a porch. Paint a room. Go running. Use these three steps in innovationchallenges or whenever you feel stuck. Build them into your problem-solving method, and in workshops. The more you practice, the more your associative fluency will grow, and the more your brain will fill in the blanks of the future with new possibilities. The rise of Internet of Things, Big Data, and 3D printing is challenging everything we already know. Its also accelerating the rate of change and of innovation. To navigate this future, our thinking has to become as rich and varied as the world around us; a world that demands that each of us is thinking like a futurist. Author Bio: Cecily Sommers, author of Think Like a Futurist: Know What Changes, What Doesnt, And Whats Next(Jossey-Bass, 2013) is the founder and president of The Push Institute, a non-profit think tank that tracks significant global trends and their implications for business, government, and the non-profit sector. A global trends analyst and popular speaker, she helps organizations understand and prepare for emerging technologies, markets, and ideas. She lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Describe Your Most Rewarding College Experience
Describe Your Most Rewarding College Experience Describe Your Most Rewarding College Experience A typical job interview question when youre applying for an entry-level position, an internship, or a college job, is, Describe your most rewarding college experience. You want to be honest, but you also want to focus on an experience that demonstrates a skill or quality that the employer is looking for in a candidate. Preparing an articulate and honest answer could put you ahead of other applicants. Youre being asked for a good reason. Your interviewer wants to know what activities you participated in and why, including those outside the classroom. What did you learn from them? Why are those memories still valuable to you today? Focus on the Values of the Company Look back at the job listing. Identify some of the key skills or qualities mentioned there, and think about college experiences that helped you develop those skills. You can also look at the âAbout Usâ section on the companyâs website to get a sense of their mission and values. Think about college experiences that helped you develop any of these key qualities. Explain Why the Experience Was Valuable Donât simply say what the experience was. Explain why you found it so valuable in a sentence or two. Again, try to connect what you got out of the experience to the values or qualities the company appears to be looking for in a candidate. Be Honest You want to connect your college experience to the job, but you also want to sound sincere. Donât make up an experience, or say that you loved an activity or event that you actually hated. Employers can tell when youre simply telling them what you think they want to hear. Check out Some Sample Answers Start preparing your answer by finding a sample interview answer you can edit to fit your personal experiences and background. Some suggestions: Volunteering as a Writing Tutor: I volunteered to be a tutor at my colleges writing center during my senior year. We offered free help to all students in every facet of writing. It was such a rewarding experience to see students who came to us stressed, anxious, or out of ideas leaving the center feeling relieved and, even better, more confident in themselves as writers.Pre-Orientation Outward Bound Program: My most personally rewarding college experience occurred even before I arrived on campus as a freshman. The college offered an outward bound program for first-year students two weeks prior to orientation day. During those two weeks, I overcame fears, made lifelong friends, and gained the self-confidence I needed to start my college journey. I even served as a leader in the program the next year. I valued the chance to encourage other first-year students to challenge themselves. Being Academically Challenged Every Day: Getting my diploma was my most rewarding college experience. I chose my college because it was a school that was going to give me a great education. I was challenged every day by my courses, and I worked very hard to earn my degree. I dedicated myself to my studies for those four years, working hard in class and seeking out help whenever I needed it. I have never felt as proud as I did at my college graduation.Stepping Outside Your Comfort Zone and Exploring the World: I was fortunate enough to be able to spend the fall semester of my junior year studying abroad in Paris. As someone who has always wanted to see more of the world but who also struggled with foreign languages, not only surviving but thriving in another country and language for four months showed me that Im capable of more than I had ever dreamed and that I can rise to challenges. I now make a point of stretching beyond my comfort zone on a regular basis, which has led to many m ore incredible experiences. Joining a Sports Team: As someone who was not very athletic in high school, I didnt expect to be part of a sports team in college. But my freshman year roommate encouraged me to join him at trials for the badminton team, and to my surprise, I made it. Being a part of a sports team for the first time not only taught me to value my physical health and well-being, prioritizing sleep and my diet, but it also reinforced everything I knew about teamwork and the importance of each person in the group.

4 Tips for Adjusting to a New Work Environment - The Muse
4 Tips for Adjusting to a New Work Environment - The Muse 4 Tips for Adjusting to a New Work Environment Acclimating to a new company can be both exhilarating and daunting. You want to jump into the role with enthusiasm, come across as a fast learner, and prove that hiring you was 110% worth it. I know: I returned to work after 10 years away and put a lot of pressure on myself to adjust as quickly as possible. While my re-entry was through a fairly unique 10-week returnship program (a.k.a., an internship program for mid-career professionals whoâve taken a break), I was subject to the same uncertainty anyone would feel upon going back to the workforce after time away. Fortunately, in addition to my background in front-line business roles, Iâd had experience in leadership and professional development, so I realized that assessing the landscape and âfitting inâ would be critical to my success. With that in mind, here are my four best tips for adjusting: 1. Pay Attention to Company Culture The role of culture canât be overstated: Cultural norms can span the range of high-level company values to very specific action steps. They usually come in the form of unwritten rules. For example: Are senior leaders approachable, or is there a more formal channel that you need to be aware of? Do colleagues eat lunch at their desks, or use that time to meet and network? Do people leave at a reasonable hour or is facetime important? Are they âalways onâ (through emails and logging in), even when theyâre out of the office? Cultureâs the outcome of encouraged and accepted behaviors. And sometimes, there are aspects of culture that arenât discovered until you make a mistake. For example, early on in a new role, I mentioned âbusiness developmentâ when referencing a topic. The senior leader in the room stopped the meeting to inform me that our firm never engages in selling, therefore the proper term was âclient development.â It didnât count against me: Mistakes happen! But one way I was able to fit in and move beyond my faux pas was to make a note of it and use the preferred terminology moving forward. 2. Be Open to New Experiences Regardless of your most recent role, changing companies means youâre entering a new situation. And this new group will inevitably do things differently. Rather than fight to do things the way youâre used to, embrace the opportunity to adopt new approaches. For example, if your new team seems more focused on output than on strategy and analysis, learn more about the associated business impact before trying to change direction. Or, if your boss is heavily focused on a thorough analysis of ROI before moving forward with a new program, make your best attempt to understand the drivers of that need. Try it the new way at least once. That way youâll give yourself a chance to determine which battles are worth fighting (and which arenât). 3. Take the Time to Build Your Network Your co-workers will be key to your success at your new company. Achieving results will require knowing whom to reach out to- at every level. Figure out who has the insights, time, or interest to help you and introduce yourself. Youâll find that most people are happy to share their expertise if you ask. And take the time to see if you have skills, insights or contacts that would be of help to your new colleagues. It never hurts to build good will. The stronger your internal network, the easier time youâll have when you need help. Bonus: You can also build your overall network, by updating your online profile with your new role. Itâs a natural reason for people to reach out and reconnect, which is always worthwhile. 4. Learn All You Can The benefits of exposing yourself to multiple perspectives and new experiences are vast. If you remain open-minded and park your ego at the door, youâre bound to benefit from an amazing amount of learning. Seriously, by just carrying around a notebook your first few days, jotting down questions, and seeking out answers, youâll pick up so much more knowledge than you had before. It doesnât matter if you think youâre supposed to know this- the fact is that you donât and the more quickly you learn, the more at ease youâll feel. Above all, itâs important to remember that youâre entering a group of established professionals and theyâll respect you for taking the time to understand how everything works. While you may feel an urge to share your past (and possibly lofty) experiences with your new team to establish yourself, resist the temptation to brag. Rather, use time with your colleagues to understand what they do and what they see as priorities. There will be plenty of time to add your perspective once youâve gotten a more complete picture and have the data you need. Before long, youâll stop feeling like âthe new personâ and start feeling like someone whoâs been there forever- in the best way possible.
